What is the difference between an Australian Labradoodle and other Labradoodles?
This is one of the most common questions that I get when someone finds out I have an "Australian Labradoodle". Know that there is a difference.
What is a Multi-generation Australian Labradoodle?
First and foremost, there isn't any Australian Shepard in the mix! So why the name? The Australian Labradoodle is a breed that originates in Australia. Since the 1980's, Australians have been creating a breed of dog with the goal of producing a purebred dog that could be used as an allergy friendly service dog. They have been purpose bred to be non-shedding and allergy friendly, to have consistent temperament and the highest health standards. Through selective breeding of only the most desirable traits over many generations, a very smart, social dog with a non-shedding, allergy friendly coat has been created. They have since been proven wonderful service and therapy dogs. As for our family, the Australian Labradoodle was the only sure bet to provide us with at healthy, friendly dog that won't irritate our allergies! It is important to support breeders that are upholding these high standards through Australian Labradoodle Association of America, and the Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association memberships. These organizations maintain massive databases where bloodlines are registered and proven with DNA profiles, to maintain the integrity of the breed. They also have hold registered breeders to a high standard with both their breeding and ethical practices, as well as protecting the health and accuracy of the breeding dogs linages. Always look for a Multi-generation Australian Labradoodle if you are an allergy sufferer.
What is a regular Labradoodle? A Labradoodle is a dog that originates from breeding a Poodle with a Labrador. They are often labeled F1, Fb or multi-generational. When two seperate breeds are crossed, the outcome is very random. Genetically, the pups are not consistent, and can result in some being more like one parent or the other. Regardless of if it is a 1st or 3rd generation, the inconsistent results of look, temperament, size, coat and health aren't predictable, and is not a risk that most that are informed are willing to take, especially for those that need an allergy friendly dog. Because they cannot be registered and there isn't an organization maintaining a database for these pedigrees, most of them are being bred without the diligence of proper genetic health testing and pedigree research that is mandatory for producing healthy puppies.
It is important to remember that you are bringing home a family member will likely live with you for 12-15 years. It is also extremely important to know what you are bringing home to your family. Not all Labradoodles are created equal. If you want a Labradoodle with good temperament, that has a beautiful allergy friendly coat and doesn't have genetic health issues, an Australian Labradoodle is for you. Just remember you always get what you pay for, and there is no way to responsibly breed quality dogs that have fully health tested and registered parents, and sell them cheaply.
